CHARACTER NAME: Kim Kitsuragi

Kim Kitsuragi was born in the city of Revachol, during the tail-end of the failed Revolution underneath which Revachol lost its independence. His parents were killed as both royalists and communists were rounded up and executed by Coalition, leaving Kim to an insecure childhood, detached from his half-Seolite heritage and raised within the systems of orphanages or foster homes. His youth was a difficult one, life as a young, gay, Seolite man marked by racism and homophobia, with Revachol in a state of civil unrest between the continuing urban warfare, measles pandemic, and economic depression. When he was in his early twenties, he joined the newly formed RCM - Revachol's police force - that had seemingly brought stability to Revachol's streets. Unfortunately, the RCM was quickly proven to be an incredibly toxic workplace, rife with police corruption and the very same bigotry that tainted Kim's upbringing.

As a result, Kim spent the next fifteen years of his life working in juvie though he was highly overqualified for the role, trapped until he was given the task to go undercover in a pinball ring, posing as a teenager well into his 30s. Upon his success, he was given two things: a much desired promotion, and the disrespectful nickname of 'Kimball'. He spent the next years of his life working as a detective, a role he cherished, though one of great strife as well; at some point during his career, his partner was killed in combat, with the greater implication being that his partner took a bullet for him. At this point, Kim led a life entirely dictated by his work, too intensely private to make true connections with others, deeply embarrassed by anything that betrayed his personality underneath his no-nonsense exterior, and set in his ways.

At the beginning of Disco Elysium, he is sent to attend a murder case in Martinaise and finds himself partnered with the player character, Harrier Du Bois, an eccentric, unstable officer struggling with amnesia. Through his week investigating the murder alongside Harry, Kim finds himself slowly opening up and reconnecting with a community he had shut himself away from until it culminated in a deadly shoot-out, leaving several people dead and Kim concussed and nursing Harry's bullet wounds in the hostel they were staying in.

PERSONALITY:

What impression does your character give when meeting someone for the first time? How does the first impression differ from your character’s true nature?

When meeting him for the first time, Kim comes across purely as a meticulously professional, detached man, almost unusual in his strict adherence to normalcy. He's a man who easily fades into the background, who can remain silent and unnoticed, so without defining personality characteristics that he often goes unaddressed during conversation. This impression is not wholly a lie - Kim is good at detaching himself, and truly prefers to keep relationships strictly professional - but certainly not his true nature. It's simply a persona that he assumes due to his fear of ridicule and his desire to fit in. Underneath it all, Kim is a man who feels extremely passionately about things, from his hobbies to his experience as a minority living in Revachol to his fashion sense. As unemotional as he may seem, he cares deeply about his city and the people in it and will show that care through actions, not words. He's also far more flawed than he lets himself admit, easily caught up in petty ploys, prone to fits of pride, inflexible in his belief system. Even if he doesn't outwardly react to things he's caught up in, he's still very much affected by them. sheer depth of emotion is the biggest difference between what he portrays and what's truly going on in his head.

How does your character handle stress? What do they do in an emergency?

Kim is the King of compartmentalization. When underneath great amounts of stress, he simply denies the fact that he's feeling any stress at all and operates entirely by the book, casting an objective eye on the situation and acting according to what he believes to be the factually correct thing to do. There's no doubt that this attitude after experiencing so much death and trauma throughout his life, has left him with psychological scars, but he chooses to repress it, hoping that acting as though it does not affect him will make it so, such as the way he can react to another character's suicide in front of him - immediately dealing with cleaning up the body - or the matter-of-fact way he deals with someone taking a bullet for him. Under certain circumstances, it's also clear that he suffers from repressed trauma from past experiences, and can be jumpy and trigger happy, nerves colouring his common sense. He's otherwise very useful to have around during an emergency if you want someone to make sure that everything is taken care of efficiently, but he's woefully ill equipped to handle the emotional side of things. If under enough emotional stress, he will explode in the moment, buckling underneath the pressure, and will viciously lose his temper -- but as soon as you see him next, it will be as though nothing ever happened at all. Save for the fact that he'll never let his guard around you again, of course, but that's seldom been a deterrent for anyone in Kim's life.

What are your character’s ambitions/goals? Why are they important to your character?

Kim's greatest ambition is to excel in his job as an RCM officer, to earn the respect and admiration of his colleagues, and to be acknowledged for his work ethic, intelligence, and above all else, his dedication to his home as a true-blue Vacholiere. This goal in and of itself is a flawed one; Kim has fallen prey to the sunk cost fallacy of how he's spent - arguably wasted - his life fighting for a corrupt entity in a failing city. His knowledge of the RCM's downfalls and the bigotry and failures within it do not stop him from wanting to excel in it anyway. Deep down, Kim just wants to be accepted as a rightful citizen of his own city, seen as a dedicated officer of the law instead of a perennial outsider, and is short-sighted enough that professional acknowledgment is the only path he can see towards that goal. His job is his life; he considers himself beyond personal fulfillment, and so this is the only way that he can see it all being worth it. There is also a part of him that relishes the power that being an RCM officer brings, and while he typically only uses this against people who 'deserve' it (such as the friendly neigbourhood racist), it's clearly a position he enjoys, and a promotion in and of itself would do wonders to bolster his reputation. Beneath the psychology of it, he also genuinely wants the best for his city, and while his way of going about it is fundamentally flawed, part of achieving his goals means the ability to affect change to secure the stability of his beloved home -- and perhaps even the ability to help restructure the RCM into realizing what he considers to be its full potential.


INVENTORY: Kim will come with the contents of his bag: his notebook, pens, cigarettes, wallet, flashlight, crowbar, camera, handkerchief, and pocketknife (if accepted as something that doesn't count as a weapon; it's more of a tool). Nothing out of the ordinary.
