Did you voice your concerns to your superior? Where I'm from, it's fully possible to turn down a promotion. It's rare, but some officers do choose to do so, for whatever reason.
I have to say, I disagree with the practice of forcing people into law enforcement. It's irresponsible, and a violation of both those who have been forced into it and those they govern.
I'm not so naive as to suggest you ask for an audience with Enma. He's even more enigmatic than my employer, and while I've been here for a number of months, I've yet to meet the Daitengu in person. But Captain Shiki seemed like a sensible enough sort.
I'm surprised they didn't hear you out. An unwilling officer hardly does effective work. Except for the fact that you did, I suppose. To be honest, I was surprised that you were placed in Enma at all. I had you pegged as someone better suited to my own clan.
I did see him, though. The Enma. He called me in to promote me himself.
Honestly, I'm not suited for the work there at all. I've been so wrapped up in this nonsense [Of making his office's lives miserable with his shenanigans] I can't say I've had the opportunity to know what your clan specializes in.
Is that so? You've certainly gathered a lot of prestige in no time at all. I'm afraid this is one problem I can't help you with. It sounds like you've exhausted all your options.
The Sutoku clan largely specializes in information gathering and commerce. Our territory has been at the centre of some scuffles between Tamamo and Shuten, and the Daitengu caused a fuss by faking his death some months ago, but we're called upon neither to entertain nor to fight, so it suits me perfectly well.
[ As it does Sims, who does not seem to be much of a fighter to Kim. He's been wrong before, but... even if he can fight, he doubts the man likes to fight. ]
Specializes in information gathering. Information gathering, what was LITERALLY his career path and studies focus. What the hell. Jack had told him that even talking about wanting to change factions was a huge taboo and to be careful who he says it to. But god, what he wouldn't give.]
That does indeed sound like it would have been better suited but unfortunately I do not have any choice in the matter nor does Hell care about what I'm better suited for in the long run it seems.
Initially, literature. Then branched out into mythologies and folklore, then the supernatural and esoteric. That was what got me my position as a researcher, then promoted to Archival work.
[And then... well. Everything else that happened after.]
That makes you well-suited for being here, then. Particularly if you happened to study Japanese folklore as well. There is no Japan where I'm from, but I've gathered that this place is taken nearly entirely out of Japanese folklore.
[ Not that Sims wanted to use it in this way... but hell, it's not like Sims wanted to use it for the horrors he faced shortly thereafter either. ]
Unusual work. There must be few of that expertise.
[ He supposes there would be more research in cryptids if there was more proof -- he has no doubt that that apparent picture that they had taken will inspire a whole new field. He's not sure how he feels about that. ]
Here, I think it's likely underneath a different name. Anthropology, perhaps. We're the exception, not the rule here.
The laws of science as I know them also apply. Honestly, it's exhausting. It's not as though I had a full view of even my own world's history, let alone this one.
But it's a necessary evil, if we're to understand the people that live here. I've been collecting some books on the matter, with varying degrees of success. You're welcome to borrow them if you like.
In fairness, you've rather had a lot on your plate between getting your bearings here, your unwanted job and promotion, and the assassination-kidnapping.
But if you have a moment, it's worth your time. And you can share if you find anything interesting that I happened to overlook.
[Basira once, Daisy once, Melanie at least once, Tim, Martin... Their initial conversation and his outpouring of his terror and fear felt like a long-past dream and he couldn't be sure.]
A friend/coworker/acquaintance/tormentor. She isn't really using it anymore.
[Whether that was because she'd turned into a giant fuckoff wolf, or because she was now dead, anyone's guess. He hopes she doesn't show up here and want it back.]
