[ He's already up, sitting on a concrete ledge outside of a convenience store, sipping shitty coffee and doing the crossword before he has to help with the last of Sutoku's preparations. ]

I couldn't get past them. I don't think Harry did either. Everyone I saw who tried eventually wound up in the river. Did you find something?

What do I think? I think I have no idea what that is.

And that it can't possibly be good. There's no reason to hide anything with an ordinary function from those in charge of setting up the parade in the first place. Do you have any idea what it could be?

I would like you to accompany this new recruit of ours in seeking a few answers from Kagerou-shi. He has suggested an interesting angle from which to tackle our kidnapping problem, and I would like to see where a chat brings us.

Even if we cannot dissuade him from this silly bounty, you might acquire some useful information- either about Kagerou himself, or Ringo-chan.

Consider these official orders.

I'd be inclined to cooperate even if they weren't orders. It's a good angle. And tackling difficult conversations like these happens to be something I have plenty of experience with.

Not that I would fight official orders, of course. [ He might. If he felt strongly enough about it. ]

What's your read on the new recruit? Think he'll be able to behave himself in front of a potentially bereaved father?

Their replies read somewhat anxious, don’t you think? Someone who is either genuine in their outrage, or genuine in their capacity to empathize. By which I mean: familiar with the stakes.

[It doesn’t escape him that Saul thought first to ask not about what happened, or what the plan was to rescue Ringo-chan, but whether she was even still alive. Familiar with the taking of hostages? Perhaps yakuza, or familiar with politics or military. 'We have shareholders', he said. Perhaps private market; yakuza or mercenary, then.]

Taking into account that they were chosen for our clan… I would think they may be the ideas type. A creative. Perhaps a slick talker, but not a sly one.

Maybe so. Appearances mean a lot to him, it's clear, which means he should be able to sort out how he should present himself in a situation such as this.
